As the polls were closing we noticed the unusually high turnout in Republican areas which "should" have favored us. Butler County came out in great numbers for the Republicans, however, Warren County went to Mike Reynolds 3 to 1.
The final numbers were 8,785 to 6,858. or 53% to 46%
There was 20% turnout, however the people who turned out didn't like the candidate. There were large numbers of Republicans who voted for Reynolds.
I will be the First to say that the Hughes campaign had the most effectively run campaign, the most money, and the stronger grassroots team. It just goes to show that beside all of that, the people get what the people want.
As I understand it, KDP and the democrats had all but given up on this election, there was very little effort seen campaigning, and there website was hosted at blogspot. It is safe to say that Democrats didn't win the race, Republicans just lost it.... bad.
What does this mean... It means that in the fall of 2010 we need to have another very strong Conservative Republican run against Reynolds to regain the seat.
Marshall fought hard in a tough race in a bad year for Republicans. He should be congratulated for the valiant effort he put forth. I have never seen a candidate work harder, and go as many places as Marshall did. In the coming days I will post some pictures of the final days of the election as he traveled the district.
